The aim of the panel is to rethink the relation between ‘text work’ and field work in Africa, firstly by considering the research history of philological work in Africa and secondly, by trying to explore the potentials of new approaches that seek to combine the study of texts, and in particularly the study of their rhetoric, with the exploration of contexts.
