In a recent article in Africa, Terence Ranger signalled an affinity between
scholarly works on the occult and popular Western ideas about Africa as backward
and superstitious. This has evoked a critical rejoinder. Is invoking the
category of the occult unavoidable? What is the politics of use of this
category?
