Short Abstract

Luciano Mauia, Mozambique (31 min)

Portuguese

The documentary recounts the story of the invention, evolution and current state of the Mozambican music movement Pandza (Dino, DJ Ardilles, NStar, Denny OG, Ziqo Cizer Boss). By representing and reframing urban gender relations, urban spaces and lifestyles, Pandza music constitutes an important urban phenomenon in the postcolonial Mozambican cityscape. The movie discusses the history of the movement, its emergence, its name (Dzukuta Pandza), as well as popular critiques and contestations around its recognition as urban art form – is Pandza music, a type of dance, or is it just “Pimba” (vulgar)? The documentary traces these issues by following the first Dzukuta/Pandza tunes up to the present.
