Abstract | Taking its point of departure in a peculiar lack of martyrs and enemies, this paper sheds light on some of the central features of the civil war in Guinea-Bissau. By describing the war as seen by the Aguentas, a militia of urban youth who fought in it, the article grants us an inside view into the dynamics of conflict that we see in this part of West Africa. The paper problematizes our regular western perspective on war, as related to ideologies and clearly defined enemies, and illuminates a Guinean understanding of warfare which is far more tactile and grounded in social possibilities and life chances. In conclusion, the article examines the difference between ‘rebellions’ and ‘revolution’ and dwells on the future political scenarios of the region.
