Abstract | In 1947 the Portuguese celebrated the 5th century of the “discovery” of Guiné and 500 years of colonialism. The celebration was well prepared: The “Centro de Estudos da Guiné Portuguesa” had been established and the first number of its “Boletim Cultural da Guiné Portuguesa” issued the year before; and the first of a long series of “Memórias”, initially based on a comprehensive ethnographic inquiry covering all the major ethnic groups in Guinea-Bissau performed in 1946, were published.
Based on selected volumes issued by the Centre and on earlier and more recent documents by Portuguese authors, my paper will attempt to place Guinea-Bissau in a Portuguese historical discourse and show how Guineans and their societies were depicted by its colonisers to comply with the ideals of “Pax Lusitana” and, thus, to legitimise Portuguese sovereignty.
