Abstract | The revolution in Zanzibar in 1964 was a major rupture in the country´s history, not only as the event resulted in a complete reversal of Zanzibar´s political set-up, but also as it led to the death and emigration of thousands, creating major social, religious and economic upheaval. These dramatic changes are felt until today and continue to inform public debates in Zanzibar. But notwithstanding its widespread discussion, clarification of the past has not yet been resolved, various contradictory memories of the revolution remain and block the emergence of a historical consensus in the collective memory of zanzibar. |
