Abstract | In this paper I shall examine a number of legal principles to demonstrate how they may contribute towards an efficient and responsive public sector in Africa using Nigeria as the main example. These principles are the freedom of information; the enforcement of socio-economic rights and public interest standing. While freedom of information facilitates an inclusive broad based participatory governing process, the enforcement of socio economic rights holds government accountable to judicially verifiable benchmarks. The last of the principles that this paper examines is that of public interest standing which assists vulnerable people, groups and institutions to canvass their grievances and positions before the law courts in a way that contributes to a stable polity. |
