Abstract | In the paper I want to discuss the relationship between cultural nationalism, seen as the cultural foundation of the nation in the modern African states and the development of new art forms. The paper will discuss this both in terms of African perceptions of the role of art and art forms and in terms of European views and the economic consequences of this. The paper will take its starting point in the discussion surrounding the work of the Ghanean painter Agbade Glover and by asking the question 'how could his market scenes be constructed as a provocation of the national culture?' widen the discussion to include questions about aesthetic norms and cultural values in different art schools and their relation to the nationbuilding role of traditional art.
The talk will be illustrated. |
