AbstractSecurity situation has been re-established in Rwanda. The country is becoming again a recognized tourism destination but has barely reached in 2006 its tourism potential. While tourism is being developed, it is an opening to maximise opportunities for the communities through pro poor growth approaches at both national and local levels. This paper presents an analysis of first community participation in the newly booming tourism industry of Rwanda. It shows (i) the challenges for developing community awareness and understanding of tourism and (ii) the importance of building partnerships between communities and private companies considering income and employment figures related to tourism activities.
