Abstract | Drawing on research conducted in rural Limpopo province, South Africa, this paper considers how a group of young people make sense of the post-apartheid conjunction of freedom and death. Although incubated under apartheid, AIDS has largely been a post-apartheid problem, bringing illness and death in the wake of political liberation and newfound opportunity. Young people are simultaneously those for whom the gift of freedom promises the most, and those who are at most at risk of dying from the effects of HIV. The paper explores their versions of what AIDS is and how it is spread, as well as its relationship to the process of democratisation and the allocation of democratic rights in particular. |
