AbstractThe study investigates the socio-economic, cultural, and demographic evolution Cameroon has undergone as a result of the traditional and colonial past and the impact of contemporary global changes using primarily the post-independence censuses, nationally representative sample survey results, and other relevant small-scale studies. Being the only African country to be colonized by the Germans, British, and French, Cameroon is left to grapple with the problem of grafting a colonial cultural legacy onto a more or less heterogeneous traditional cultural heritage. The drift toward the adoption of the modern European cultural value system gained currency in the country with the expansion in education and health services. As Cameroon continues to witness social and economic changes, it is important for the government to put in place a comprehensive and universal social security scheme to help families take care of their dependents. Additionally, the government should institute broad administrative reforms that will not only create jobs for graduates but also make working attractive in Cameroon.
