Abstract | Prior to 1900, the absence of draught animals dictated the total reliance on human power for all forms of mobility and transport in Central Africa. Consequently, the introduction of industrially manufactured technology that facilitated mobility entailed a radical transformation from a world in which mobility and transport were powered by humans to one in which mobility and transport came to be externally powered.
The paper to be presented deals specifically with the advent of steam technology and the impact thereof in Central Africa. Taking the mines of southern Katanga as its focus, the paper seeks to delineate the relationship between steam technology and human muscle power, and it does do within the specific fields of mining and transport.
