Abstract | Although Guinea Bissau has for long dealt with emigration, the 1998 coup d’état led to a massive abandon of the country by members of elite groups such as entrepreneurs, state officials and former members of the government, NGO’s professionals, doctors, professors, journalists. Many of these new migrants were the most active voices of the former civil society in Guinea-Bissau and their commitment to their country helped to create a diasporical sense of identity in their new homelands. In this paper I’ll focus on the associations of the members of the Guinean Diaspora in Portugal, stressing their identity strategies and their role in the recreation of an idea of nationhood. |
