China in Africa: Convergences and Contradictions

Panel 67. New players, old tricks?: Africa in the 21st century
Paper ID317
Author(s) Taylor, Ian
Paper No paper submitted
AbstractChina's expansion into Africa has been criticised on the grounds that it is contradicting emergent norms vis-a-vis governance as promoted by the AU and Nepad. In fact, there is a convergence of norms between Beijing's no-questions-asked policies and the neo-patrimonial modes of governance as practised by most African leaders. That helps explain why, in part, China is a popular partner for many state leaders on the continent.
