Abstract | This paper explores the everyday sociality among young men in urban Burkina Faso. The ethnographic data for the discussion is based mostly on individual and group discussion with a small group of young, predominantly Muslim men in Bobo-Dioulasso, most of whom work as arts and crafts traders and in local tourism. In the paper I will explore the way these young men, who spend most of the day sitting together in front of one of the craft shops, socialize, how they deal with the differences in their individual approaches to religion, how they view their role in the local Muslim community and how they deal with the un-Islamic elements of their everyday jobs. Furthermore the paper will discuss the rather high level of tolerance that exists among this group of friends/colleagues for the different levels of commitment to religious practice. The ethnographic data is linked to theoretical discussion of the local concepts of faith, friendship, hope (jigiya) and success. |
