AbstractThis paper seeks to substantively widen the politics of a resurgent African diaspora. It does so by locating the growing debate on diasporas and development in a broader political economy context to provide a historical understanding of how Africa has been shaped by globalisation and the hegemony of neo-liberalism. To address these issues, the paper examines the profound if uneven political, economic and social consequences of restructuring across the continent and its impacts on the opportunities and constraints vis-à-vis the different actors which ultimately shape mobility, migration and diasporic activities. In particular, the paper considers the significance of neo-patrimonial systems of governance and the crisis of stateness which will be analysed using three case studies: Rwanda, Ghana and South Africa. By setting these against the structural backdrop of the globalised economy and closely associated ideology of globalisation, the paper will evaluate the developmental potential of an apparently rejuvenated African diaspora.
