AbstractViolent conflicts are a strong driving force of change that may lead to a broad reconfiguration of the social order and a profound transformation of social relations. People establish new relationships of trust in different settings of social interactions while other, already existing ties may fade. Drawing on field research conducted in northern Côte d’Ivoire this paper shows, how relations of trust have been (re-)constructed along new lines of interaction and within societal spheres. The actors often build on existing relationships of trust, but simultaneously, novel spheres of trust and security emerge. As trust is a basic precondition of societal life, these spheres of trust seem to be a stabilizing factor, but at the same time they are fragmenting the society in Northern Côte d’Ivoire.
