AbstractIt is proposed to present a comparative study that analysis the importance of the tourism in the development of the local communities in African insular context. The case studies are two archipelagos localized in the Atlantic Ocean, namely a small island developing country, Sao Tome and Principe, and a region of Guinea Bissau, Bijagos. Both has particular environmental sites, such as protected areas, national parks, endemic species and coast with beaches, as well as important cultural signs and practices that characterize the local people. In the study it is considered the resulting benefits of the tourism increase as well as the perverse effects for the communities.
