Abstract | Cape Town is characterised by both racial-cultural diversity and deep economic inequalities. This paper explores how race and class shape perceptions of distributive justice, i.e. popular perceptions of the shape of inequality in practice, of the justice of redistribution, and of the desert of different categories of poor and non-poor people. The paper uses data from a 2005 survey as well as qualitative interviews on popular understandings of race, class and distributive justice. |
