| Abstract | Against a background of extensive legislative and policy reforms imposed on the British asylum system, this paper analyzes the trajectories of asylum claims made by Ethiopian and Eritrean asylum applicants in the UK. In particular I examine: (i) the factors which influence whether a case is accepted by a lawyer/legal firm; (ii) the factors which influence how a lawyer translates the applicant’s narrative of flight into a legal claim for asylum; and (iii) the strategies which lawyers adopt in arguing an asylum case in a court of law. |
