AbstractThe paper will deal with the basic question what structures voter alignment and party affiliation in Africa's multi-party regimes. Usually the assumption is that ethnicity provides the major explanation for voters preferences and party formation. But looking at some elections results we can assume this might not be the only factor. Hence, the question is: Is ethnicity really the major explanans? Based on data from different sources (election results, opinion survey) the paper will analyse various factors that contribute to voter alignment and party affiliation in Zambia. The survey, funded by the German Research Foundation, was based on a questionnaire especially designed to evaluate people's perception of attitudes to and preferences for political parties, to find out why they vote for a particular party.
