Abstract | Northern Namibia has experienced a violent and unpredictable guerrilla war from 1966 to 1990. The war effectively eroded private trust into the reliability of both strangers and friends, whose role in the conflict was often unclear. But both during the war and after, a minimum of public trust based on social structure and a common notion of civility and the public self was held up. This trust facilitated a return to social normality and cooperation after the conflict. How and why was that form of trust maintained? Where is the border between public and private trust, and how do they relate to each other? |
