Abstract | The experimental Mosque College of Lamu established at the tail-end of the nineteeth century and studied by Lienhardt in the 1950s has metamorphosed into several colleges. These colleges have been initiated as a result largely of internal dissensions within the Jamalilleil Shariffite clan and reflect the political and ideological trajectories that its branches have taken, and reflect not only their intellectual orientations but also the global reach of Islamic networks. The foundational sufi institution has created space for Shiite thought and another whose founders were educated in Madinah. What is the implication of these developments for Islam in Kenya and the East Africa region? |
