Abstract | Human and peoples rights have become a global topic. There is presently a universal concern for respect for them. In most societies, Human rights are seen as inherent and inviolable rights. Countries with written constitutions such as Nigeria, U.S.A. and Canada have this entrenched in its constitution. In the advanced world this rights are taken for granted and the states do everything humanly possible to promote and protect them. In Nigeria, for example, chapters II and IV of the 1999 Constitution made liberal provisions for human rights. And there is an additional provision for the enforcement of chapter IV of the constitution specifically called “Fundamental Human Rights”. Respect for these rights as is globally acknowledged is an indication of civility. However, a lot more has to be done to make the ordinary man on the street feel the value and impact of human right laws and provisions. My thinking is that any valid agenda for development must consider the role and the rule of law. This paper addresses these concerns. |
