Abstract | In a context of exile memories of home change with changing conditions and with time passing. Ideas about home then tend to crystallize around ideal images of one’s country and about one’s good memories of certain specific periods of time and places. The way the past at home is also interpreted and modelled by past experiences of forced migrations. Yet, home may become more or less important depending on the achievements in the new country, the strength of the new social network and other parameters. The Somali Zigula have experienced these differentiation in the changing view of their “home”; when they were in Somalia, original idealized home was Tanzania yet, in exile, the idea of Somalia as “home” gets different facets according to periods and phases. |
