The position is fully funded for three years. The PhD project will focus on Brazilian security cooperation with Africa, examining its impact on African security governance. It is part of the DFF-funded research project Transregional South-South Security Cooperation and the New Geopolitics of African Security Governance. The École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), based in Paris, France, is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher for the WomAtWork project within the Institute of African Worlds (IMAF). This full-time, temporary position is part of an ERC-funded initiative exploring the history of female urban labor in Africa, focusing on Kenya. The WomAtWork project examines how women in professions such as midwifery, beauty services, market trading, and craftwork shaped urban economies in Kenya between 1919 and 1970. It investigates labor patterns, social perceptions, and the political dynamics surrounding these professions, emphasizing how women navigated social stigmas and engaged in protest movements.The successful candidate will be based at IMAF’s Aubervilliers site on Campus Condorcet and will conduct archival research, oral history interviews, and media analysis. The research will draw from photographic archives, missionary records, and vernacular press sources to reconstruct women’s labor history. Applicants should hold a PhD in History or a related field, with expertise in African studies, labor history, or gender studies.
