ECAS 2011 - 4th European Conference on African Studies

We have received a number of inquiries regarding abstracts/papers that have been removed from the NAI site. The files can however still show in the search engines, Google Scholar etc. This is because the search engines are indexed on a regular basis and it can take some time before the files are so to say removed from their radar. Hopefully, the files will not be visible in a few days or at the latest within a few weeks.

The ECAS 4 main menu item will be removed during the fall of 2011 but the documentation will be saved. Click on the main menu item Events and then ECAS 4 in the left hand menu.

PANEL SCHEDULE ECAS 4
The schedule for the conference's panels is now available.

The International African Institute has named Professor Peter P. Ekeh (State University of New York at Buffalo) the 2011 Lugard lecturer. The lecture, to be given during the 4th European Conference on African Studies, is entitled “Basil Davidson and the Culture of the African State”. In the lecture, Peter P. Ekeh will play tribute to Basil Davidson's scholarship of the African state and at the same time examine its limitations. Peter P. Ekeh argues that Davidson misunderstood key points in the evolution of the African state, particularly the role played by Muslim Arabs in re-directing the character of the African state. The lecture attempts to offer an historical perspective on the difficulties that have plagued the history and culture of the African state.

Professor Issa G. Shivji (Dept. of Law, University of Dar es Salaam) and Professor Oyeronke Oyewumi (Dept. of Sociology, Stony Brook University, USA) have been announced as the keynote speakers for the conference. Additionally, the International African Institute has named Professor Peter P. Ekeh (State University of New York at Buffalo) the 2011 Lugard lecturer.

The 4th European Conference on African Studies (ECAS) will be convened in Uppsala on 15-18 June 2011. ECAS 2011 is co-organised by NAI and the African Studies in Europe (AEGIS).
